Why Are People Buying Green Homes?
Green Homes are healthier, happier homes. By eliminating toxic pollutants such as formaldehyde contained in insulation, glues and carpet, the air that you breathe is healthy, fresh and clean. Green Homes are more comfortable. Radiant heated floors heated via solar hot water roof panels keep you warm with consistent temperatures throughout the room. Studies prove that radiant heating is a healthier way to keep you house warm. Air circulation via traditional forced air heating systems stir up dust, are noisy and hard on the sinuses. Green Homes are more economical to operate. Energy systems utilizing the sun’s energy to create heat and electricity result in lower operating costs. Imagine deriving virtually all the hot water and heat for your home from the sun. Green Homes have greater resale value. Market studies have proven that well designed, well constructed homes that incorporate green technologies hold greater value than other homes. Green Homes have smaller ecological footprints. Green homes reduce the carbon footprint as they generate their own power and heat, thus reducing your carbon footprint and helping the current global warming crisis. You can feel good about the home you’ve purchased, not only for yourself, but also for your children and generations to come.

Dale & Peggy Bates Residence – 671 B 1st Ave North

Delphinium is the result of twenty-five years of eco-conscious design,
healthy lifestyle values, and a deep understanding of the laws of nature.
Conceived as a home for Dale Bates, founder of Living Architecutre and
his wife Peggy, a spa designer and Feng Shui consultant, it is also a
demonstration of the nurturing relationship between form and life.
With thermal mass walls, active and passive solar systems, recycled and
sustainable materials, Delphinium is highly energy efficient and environmental.  Additional features include: Plant based zero VOC paints, energy star appliances, EMF Mitigation, Lazure painting, cold pantry, whole house water filter and restructuring unit and edible planting.

"Sleeping Bison” Residence - 360 South Hulen Way

The design for “Sleeping Bison” incorporates active and passive solar principles. Living rooms all orient to the south, while utility rooms are located on the north side of the house. Eight foot tall windows and French doors grace the south and east façades, while west and north windows are smaller and few. The roof and deck overhangs were calculated to admit low winter sun for passive solar heating and to keep the high summer sun off the glazing. The 4” thick stained concrete floors, concrete countertops and central stone chimney provide thermal mass for winter heat storage and heat mitigation in summer. Operable windows located low and high in the wall provide for excellent cross ventilation and stack effect. The home has Sun Valley Solar solar electric and heating systems. The home’s “building-integrated” Unisolar PV system was one of the first legal grid-tied systems in the state of Idaho. The PV panels produce about 75% of the home’s electrical requirements. Appliances are Energy Star compliant, and most lighting fixtures are equipped with compact fluorescent bulbs. Two Thermomax solar thermal panels produce about 80% of the home’s domestic hot water, and a high-efficiency, wall-mounted Monitor boiler provides backup radiant floor heat and hot water. The xeriscaped garden consists mostly of native species, including a high prairie Buffalo Grass lawn, and requires only occasional irrigation.

Harned Ritzau Home – 361 River Trail, Hailey

Owners Kirsten Ritzau and Tom Harned desired a zero-energy home with healthy indoor air quality and green, earth-friendly materials and techniques when they planned and built their home. ICF walls and poly-urethane insulation help the passive solar design maintain a comfortable year round interior reducing the homes requirement of large amounts of gas to heat it. Radiant floor heat with tile flooring and low/no VOC finishes help to maintain healthy indoor air quality. High-efficient wood-fired heat sources were used to take advantage of the abundance of firewood from the local forests. The homes waste system includes a constructed wetland to help improve the quality of the waste water before it is introduced into the ground. Designed by local architect Rebecca Bundy, the home was part of the LEED for Homes Pilot program and is in the final stages toward a Gold level LEED Certification. The solar panels (both PV and domestic hot water) coupled with their electric choices within the house help them to realize their zero-energy goal.
